Solon has a strong economy and has been honored with the Google eCity Award, which recognizes Solon as one of the top ten cities in the United States for economic development. The Top Workplaces award was presented by Locus FS, which named Solons one of the best employers in Ohio in 2019, and the Cleveland Business Journal's Best Workplace award.
The Solon Center for the Arts is located in the historic Old Town Hall, which has served as a school, library, police and fire station over the years. The new headquarters of Channel Products in Solons reflects the company's commitment to transmitting a corporate culture to its employees and the community in general. The town was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, the son of Lorenzo and his wife, the daughter of the first mayor of the city. The town is named after the name that was supposedly the first name of the young Lorenzo.
The railroad helped Solon grow, and in 1857 John Mahone, the founder of the Cleveland and Ohio Railway Company, established a line that ran through Solon. Railways have been a major contributor to its growth ever since, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city was expanded to include railways.
The nearly 11 km long MetroParks Bikeway provides a well-designed link between Solon's parks and the rest of the city. US-422 provides access to the Ohio State Highway System, which provides a corridor from Cleveland via Pennsylvania to Cleveland and then on to Ohio City, Ohio and finally via the Cleveland MetroDOT system of public transportation to New York City. It also allows travel along the Pennsylvania border and the eastern Pennsylvania and Ohio border through the Ohio State Highway System, and is an important link in the corridor that runs from Solan to Warren, through Cleveland and into Pennsylvania.
